Tuesday 30th November - Day 14

It will be a quick blog tonight as I am almost out of internet usage at the place we are staying. We went into Tasmans best cafe today. Jester House is another gem and is located between Nelson and Motueka. The kids got to play with and feed the tame eels, then play in the very cool playground and explore in what is like a fairy grotto.
We had a great coffee and snacks including lavender shortbread for which we obtained the recipe for the book. Yay! Judy and Steve Richards own the place and have been in this location for 19 years. Over the years it has evolved into a sustainable, unique and peaceful place to enjoy great food and coffee.
Back to the Top 10 for lunch and the kids swum for ages in the pool. We then headed off to the source of the river whose name escapes me in this moment but I will let you know. The boys went in and we have some great shots of them freezing and enjoying every moment jumping into the crystal clear water.
Back to the beach for a swim and then on to the Holiday park for dinner and packing up to leave early tomorrow. We are heading to Greymouth. We wondered if it was appropriate to go on the eve of the memorial and have been assured by the locals that it is good to have something positive going on too.
Will finish now in the hope that I manage to post.

Monday 29th November - Day 13

Had the best nights sleep in a very comfy bed. Matthew was lying in bed planning how to fit in all the cafes and how to have a majorly productive day. We decided to just cruise the morning with more washing and a good breakfast together, making the most of having three nights in one place.
Post brekky we all headed out to the pool. Ruby managed to do strokes and breath, most impressive. We then had mixed shoulder ride wars with Ruby and Mum wiping the floor with the others (yeah right). Lots of laughter and fun was had by all.
Chores complete it was time to get back on the cafe mission. After taking photos of the oversize crabs, we went through Mapua on our way to Nelson and tried for a cheap lunch at the bakery. Not cheap, not great, never mind.
We had heard great things about Lambretta cafe and every word was true. We met the focussed and fast talking Rhys and his partner, who was a little more chilled, Leanne. The food was fantastic, the scooters and themed surrounds popped, the kids area kept Ruby happy for a long time and it has been voted by the family as the best cafe we have been to so far. Service is top of mind and Rhys and Leanne have managed to create lifestyle for themselves and experience for the punter that is to be admired.
We took the long way home trying to find another cafe we had been told about. We found it and it was closed, as was the car door on Rubys fingers. Not too bad, but not fun either. I think the kids are competing to have the biggest injury. Ethan cut his leg (little) by the pool and Mika slipped and has some pretty impressive bruises on his leg and side.
Once we got back to Motueka Top 10 Holiday Park everyone was back into the pool. Have to say that these top 10 parks are great for the kids with pools and gamesrooms to keep them happy.
Dinner is on the go and we are enjoying not having to move on for two more nights. Loving the Moa dresses and the space in the Honda. Sponsers are a beautiful thing.
See you tomorrow...

Murchison to Motueka

Family fun. Very nice places to stay and sandflies aplenty

Sunday 28th November - Day 12

Had the nicest time at Riversong but have to say that between the rooster and the sandflies it was an early morning start. The kids wouldn't eat the free range eggs as they were tinged a little green in the shell. Insides all good but not what they were used to. Mika and I had a nice early morning walk through the town of Murchison and checked out the cafes and the horses.

On the road and we went to the Red Barn Animal Park cafe. It was pretty hot and again those sandflies were keen on making friends. We had a great coffee made by Natasha the owner and another by her best barista. The kids checked out the animals and Ruby was convinced that she had seen a moose, I believe it was a well adorned deer. They have great plans for the location which include sprucing up the area around the waterhole so visitors can use that too. On hearing the word waterhole the family grabbed bathers and with permission went to what is becoming our favourite interlude. Swimming in the rivers is a little chilly at times but beautiful and we are learning to change in record time while keeping our dignity in the open air.

We had been looking forward to catching up with my brother Pete and family, especially the newest member Flynn. So after arriving at the Motueka Top 10 and settling in in our very nice motel unit we gave them a call. Kids had a swim and we began the great washing mission. Whanau rescued us from domestic drudgery and we headed back to theirs for a bbq. Really lovely to spend time together as because we live on different islands it doesn't happen often. I really miss spending time with my big brother and family.
After too short a time and the kids all falling in love with Flynn, it was back to Motueka for the night.

Saturday 27th November - Day 11

I heard whispers early in the morning and slept on. On awakening much later it was to find Matthew and I deserted by the kids. They had found themselves a movie in the early morning T.V room and so we had the luxury of chatting uninterrupted for the first time in eleven days. Working, managing kids and cafes, driving and enjoying the travels leaves little time for us to just be and it was a most welcome change. I think the midnight mission to the ablution block had taken its toll, between that and vivid dreams I needed the processing time to be back to me.
The intensity of moving from place to place, meeting lots of new people, being in close proximity to the family over an extended time frame all makes for rapid personal growth. For those reading from psychotherapy its like ET with changing scenery, the good bits of ET mostly.
Anyway post packing, at which we are now experts, we went into Hamner Springs proper and I demanded a coffee. It was already 11.30 and I wasn't prepared to wait to the next stop. Lots of protest from others who wanted treats but I had a selfish mother moment and it was good.
Climbing upward to Lewis Pass the scenery pulled me back into the travels of days gone by and the heat was one I haven't experienced for a long time. It is different from the north, more intense like the flavour of reduced apple juice.
We passed Maruia Springs that Ethan had visited before with his mum and on into Maruia itself. There we visited Reid's Store, another cafe that has a good reputation. Mark and Karen are the owners and they were very happy to tell their story, be included in the book, have a copy of the original book and take our money for lunch. The cafe is currently on the market.
It is really interesting to me the different attitudes and levels of hospitality we come across. We are staying in Murchison tonight at the Riversong Cottages. Jenny is our host and she is hospitality personified. A warm welcome pointing out the local swimming hole which was much needed in the heat of the day. On meeting Ruby she offered up a pony ride and when we came back from our swim she came through with that promise. The kids got to round up and then feed the free range chickens, collecting eggs that Jenny donated for breakfast tomorrow. To top it off she offered to look after the kids if Matthew and I wanted to have dinner out alone. We didn't take her up on her offer but it was much appreciated and revived my spirits after becoming disillusioned by my days cafe experience.
My life experience is such that generosity of self, as Jenny has shown us, leads to abundance. I wish it upon her and Melissa in buckets.
I spoke with my brother Pete and we are meeting him in Motueka tomorrow and joining the whole family for a bbq on monday night. Looking forward to that.
I am lying on my bed in my cottage with birds, river, horses and lovely gardens outside. I feel rested physically and in my soul. Love...love..love.dah-de-dah.

The thrill of travelling

We have been with the dolphins, hung a Moa, and had coffee deep in the bush. The photos tell it all

Friday 26th November - Day 10

We needed to do the work for two cafes this morning before going to watch the whales at 10.30am. So up early, car packed and a decision made that we would only spend the one night in Kaikoura. We are to be in Murchison tomorrow night and it feels like a bit of a hike in one day. So tonight we are aimming for Hamner Springs.
First stop Hislops cafe. This place has been around for years now and has morphed from the original hippie, early organic pioneer into a pretty slick operation. Paul and Elizabeth are the owners and they were hosting the opening of the wine bar section on the night we arrived. This place feels a little more restauranty (technical term again) than cafe like and yet it came highly recommended and it certainly fills a niche. We had some tasty sweet treats and good coffee before we revisited The Beach House to get the final photos and low down.
Job done we went to the old Railway building to check in for Whale watching. The last time I went there were no loos on the boats, the ride was rough and mostly without cover. I had the kids all with warm jackets and pre boat bathroom visits. I am never making anyone take anything warm again. We were in padded seats with a screen show as we headed out to sea completely undercover. We saw whales, albatross, fur seals and dolphins (these were the highlight for all). I have to say though that I prefer the experience from the old days. I understand the need for comfort and the presentation on board was really informative, I enjoyed it, but averting your eyes while someone pees over the side was something I remember with affection.
After a second trip to the Original Seafood BBQ we said our goodbyes to Kaikoura and on the road to Hamner Springs. Matthew and Ethan had visited a couple of years ago and were keen to return. I hadn't been there since I was a child and had vague memories of snow and water but not much more. The kids were tired after their morning on the sea and so was Matthew. They all slept their way through some fantastic scenery, alpachas and roadside rabbits. I was re introduced to the braided river and sung along with Eric Clapton, happy in my solitude.
We made it into Hamner Springs and set about finding accomodation for the night. We ended up at the Alpine Adventure holiday park. Voted best so far by Ethan. A great playground, tyre swings, obstacle course, games room and so the list went on. We stayed in a cabin that had seen better days but was clean and functional.
We battled the sandflys and blowflys over dinner and yet again went for an early night. For the first time we turned on a t.v and watched for a bit and then off to the land of nod.

Thursday 25th November - Day 9

Woke up before the rest of Wellington, well apart from the part that seems to have not slept. I heard alot of partying going on around where we were staying and the bottles were being collected almost before the sun rose. As it happened that was as it should be as we had to be checking in for the Interisland Ferry at 7.25. After a frantic navigation of the one way system we managed to collect Ethan and get to the ferry on time. I had recollection of many a crossing with Contiki and with family as a child, rushing last minute to make it. My anxiety levels were peaking.
Anyway once on the boat we were well looked after by Henry and Owain. We had a fantastic coffee from the girls in the bar and they certainly had service with personality nailed. Our objective was to take a look at the Olivito Cafe which has been set up to be less foodhall more cafe. We did and it was just fine, but the interesting thing was the coffee and how that is so much a part of our culture now. The coffee line was massive as we set sail. It seems we all are collectively addicted. The kids made the most of the family room and I managed to get into the Kaitaki lounge in order to do some work on the internet. In the pockets where it dropped out I spent time on mutual recommendation of cafe and destination with the IT guy who was on board.
We drove off the other side and the old feeling of home hit me as it always does when I am in the south. After such an early morning there was a bit of sleeping taking place as we made our way to Kaikoura. We stopped at Nins Bin but the prices were restrictive and so we had to pass on satisfying that particular craving.
We made it to Kaikoura for a late and much needed lunch. Leontia (I hope I spelt your name correctly) from Blue Duck had recommended The Beach House as a cafe to visit and that is where we ended up. It is a house with a Tamariki Room and is owned and operated by Wayne and Coral and their girls. We had a very good coffee and food along with a chat to Wayne. Good people and the spirit of the place is one that felt familiar. Mika made friends with Sid the dog who is very selective when it comes to people. I didn't make the grade as he departed as soon as I got close.
We settled into our accomodation and the kids made use of the games room. Ruby, Matthew and I made use of the pool. Bliss after a day on the road.
Wayne had mentioned a BBQ on the beach on the way to the seal colony and so we decided to have a look for dinner. Kate made us very welcome and we had seafood that was caught that day at a price that was most affordable. Very, very good food and the location and cleaning up system appealed as well. We chatted for a while and made a plan to return for lunch the next day.
Another long day and we were very pleased to lay the heads on the pillows. Tomorrow we watch Whales.

Wednesday 24th November - Day 8

Woke up this morning by the Whanganui river. I am forming an attachment to this awa and wonder if somehow we are connected from days gone by. The Motel unit at the whanganui top ten was fabulous. Lots of room for all and Andre and his staff were very helpful and friendly. No charge for the pegs here just make sure you bring them back. The ducks made quick friends hoping for a feed I'm guessing but we didn't oblige. Ruby told me not to walk on the grass in bare feet cause it was slimy. I'm thinking duck doo. The whole park is clean and very kid friendly. In fact I really like the city too. This is a place I would like to spend some more time. Unfortunatly we have people to see and cafes to visit and will have to move on.

After a Ruby swim, boys in the games room and packing parents we were on the road again. Before leaving the area we headed up to Brent and Claire on the Spirit of the River Jet boats. Ethan and Ruby had not been on a jet boat before and so were pretty keen and Mika who had been was even Keener to get on the water. Claire and I had spoken a number of times on the phone and a hug seemed appropriate on arrival. We got on the boat with a few other guests and it was up the river to the Flying Fox. the river was yet again beautiful with low flying ducks, wild goats and stunning scenery the whole way.
We got to the flying fox and walked up to be met by Corrine and John. John and his wife Annette are the creators of this magnificant place and kaitiaki of the original Pa site. Annette is now very taken up with being the Mayor of Whananui (thank you god for the moving on of Michael) so John is the man on site at The Flying Fox. This cafe wins the award for being the most difficult to access. You can get there by flying fox or by boat, otherwise you just miss out. We had beatiful lemon drink on arrival and coffee and muffins. John showed us around the accomodation and gardens and Corinne and I worked out that we were related through the Tuahiwi Marae.
The longdrop with a view was a highlight for all and Matthew and I are trying to work out how we can return and stay for a week to complete the book in peace. All those who may be available to look after kids watch out. It seems that the place became known as much for the food that Annette creates as the sublime location and hospitality. Now she is otherwise occupied the food is still good but those who are staying tend to self cater. You'll get your coffee and muffin but not so much the main meal. Again I am after a recipe and hoping for the famous Kumara bread. We shall see. Onwards an upward. After saying our goodbyes to Brent and Claire ( gotta do the trip if you are in the area it's amazing) we went on to the best playground I have ever come across in NZ. Kowhai park.
Off to Wellington on a long journey where I drove and all else snored. Past a fire on the road, we just got through before they stopped traffic, (thank you universe) . On arrival we dropped Ethan off at the Beehive to his mum and then on to my sisters place, exhausted and keen to go on the ferry to the mainland tomorrow.

More photos

The first lot of photos

Well we have taken hundreds of photos and even some video. Here are some of the highlights

Tuesday 23rd November - Day 7

We are getting the packing thing down pat now and managed to breakfast and be gone by 9.30. A new record! The day stretched out in front of us with a bit of travelling to get to Whanganui via Opunake and some cafes to visit.
First leg to Opunake was nice. Following the surf highway with the tasman on one side and the mountain on the other. A couple of photo stops along the way and we ended up at Sugar Juice Cafe. The owners Beth and Jarrah were not there on the day but the women who were there, Sharon, Gwenyth and co, made us very welcome and gave is the the cafe story we needed. Really good food and I am itching to get hold of the wholemeal pastry recipe but I think I may be pushing the proverbial up hill. The caramel slice however I may just be able to manage. I will have to have a converstion with Beth.
Matthew headed down to the beach with the kids while I finished up in the Cafe and then I went down to meet them. What started out as a look ended up with all the kids swimming and and digging for Spain. After an hour or so we headed back to the paddling pool and playground across the road. Best place for kids. All three had a ball even though the pool was below all their knees. It served the double purpose of removing the sand before getting back into the Honda.
Back on the road via a petrol station where the guy does haircuts, coffee, hardware and any number of other services.
We arrived at Wanganui River Top Ten Holiday Park to find all things that kids could want. Bouncing pillow, heated swimming pool, tramp, swings, slides, the list goes on. So here I am now sitting in our motel unit enjoying the peace and serenity as the kids have a swim. I do believe I may now go and join them prior to dinner. Ka kite ano.

Monday 22nd November - Day 6

Woke up at the Belt Rd Holiday Park having had our first night all in the same room. Matthew wins the award for loudest snore (no surprises there!). We had breakfast and after exploring the surrounds headed off down to The Big Wave Cafe on the beach. The boys walked and Mika had an injury to his already sore foot. Rescue mission by Mike from the cafe and we settled in. Ruby and I had taken the fab car around and so had arrived in time for a very nice coffee for me and a drink for her.
I met Michelle and we had a chat about how the cafe came to be. Mike used to build luxury motorhomes and has always been into surfing. He had the idea while sitting on the beach at Piha. As we know things in Piha struggle for traction and so he moved the idea to New Plymouth and Piha is worse off for not keeping him there.
Imagine sitting on the beach in your retro armchair, supping the perfect coffee, watching the energetic souls pass you by at varying speed. The walkway is always happening and the dogs know that they can score a biscuit and liquid refreshment at The Big Wave.
We spent a fair amount of time getting the low down for the book and eating some high quality pizza. It's amazing the fantastic food that comes out of such a small place. While we were working the kids managed a fair looking dam on the beach/river that is just in front of the cafe, couldn't really ask for more.
It came time to leave and we went back to the Park. Ruby had a small dose of TV as she still wasn't feeling fantastic and the boys went with Matthew to the internet cafe. Then Doctor for ruby and boys to the Aquatic Centre. The slides there are unbelieveably fast according to the reports I heard and it was the boys highlight of the day.
Meanwhile at the doctor Ruby and I were making friends with the receptionist and nurse. Lovely women, great chat. The doctor was a little more bristly, and I was left loving our regular doctor more than I already do. Upshot was that Ruby has asthma that needs monitoring. Will do.
After a slap up meal back at the Belt Rd Holiday Park we settled in for another night of close and loving family sleeping. Night night.

22 November 2010

Sunday 21st November - Day 5

Beautiful brekky at the lodge, back up the road to say goodbye to the crew and pump through a little petrol for the Odyssey as we had run ourselves a little short. Hugs and goodbyes complete we made our way back out from a very special place.
We had been given a tip about Laurens Lavender Cafe. On highway 43, the forgotten world highway through to Whanamomona and then Stratford. The reception was very friendly and the coffee good. Only problem being the rain that decided to bucket down as soon as we arrived and the lavender not having managed to flower as of yet. We are going to try to revisit a little later in the trip.
Speaking to some locals who were at the cafe about the best way through to New Plymouth led us to staying on 43. It is the 'long and winding road' that has been the subject of many a song. Very scenic and worth a look but possibly not the best idea with three kids and a deadline. We had to be in New Plymouth in time to check out The Bach at Breakwater. It was Sunday and the cafe is closed Monday/Tuesday so we had to push on. Going past Mt Taranaki/Egmont was a highlight as it emerged from behind a curtain of cloud.
We arrived at The Belt Rd Holiday Park and were very pleased to have a comfy bed and a veiw out to sea. Great facilities and a chance to catch up on washing and work.
After settling in we went down to The Bach on Breakwater, it was choca and we were pretty tired by this point. Barbara was there with the family including her two day old newest grandchild. Very kindly she took the time to have a quick chat to me and Matthew had a chance to take some photos. We were unable to stay for dinner but checked out the daytime menu that had lots of goodlooking cafe food. The numbers of people present and the food we saw passing made it an easy inclusion in the book.
Back at the Belt Rd Holiday Park and a phone call from Dan with a new possibility. We are to go jetboating up the Whanganui River on Wednesday with Brent and Claire from Spirit of the River Jet. Into another unusual 'cafe' run by the new Mayor of Whanganui. It is the Flying Fox which is accomodation, organic produce and 'cafe' for those travelling on the river. Can't wait.
All in for a good nights sleep listening to the sea. Night night.

Saturday 20th November - Day 4

We slept in the Blue Duck lodge. Beautiful linen, bathroom and kitchen. Large table with bench seats etc. Just the bomb!! Outside large deck and a big lawn to lax out on. Wendy had told us about a beach by the river that was down a challenging pathway so Mika decided to tackle it and I followed in my pajamas very soon after. On my way down I heard some goats and thought very little of it. A few ropes and ladders later I made it in my muddy pj's down to where Mika was. He had come upon three wild goats on the other side of the river and watched them disappear into the bush. Beautiful.
We had a bitsa of a breakfast and then the boys went to walk into Blue Duck central as a way to fill the morning. Ruby made some magnificant domino towers and back to bed for a while. Dan turned up to give us the information we needed to fill the gaps and we made some plans for the days ahead with his help. That was the last we saw of Dan as he was out of the valley for a family wedding. Matthew and I did some work done on photos and text and then we headed off to catch up with the boys. Unbeknown to us they had hitched a ride (after a quiet word from Dan) with Noel the builder. They had been at central for a while playing with the dogs and chatting to the people. Another lunch at the cafe and then back to the Lodge for a rest. Matthew and Ethan crashed for a while. Mika, Ruby and I chatted, played and caught up on some mending (so domesticated). Wendy showed us through the old homestead that is currently being restored. Alot of history in this part of the world.
We had been invited to join some crazy people for dinner. They were doing their own version of the coast to coast and finished a kayak section at Blue Duck. So we arrived early and took some photos and collected a recipe for the goat stew that is to appear in the book, and that we had for dinner. Very tasty.
I can't say enough about the hospitality, knowledge and passion of Dan and the Blue Duck team. We had an amazing time and all the kids are planning on returning to work when they are old enough. I am hoping to return for a visit sooner than that. Plans are afoot.

Friday 19th November

Took us a while to get out of the Woodlyn Park this morning. Ruby had been up most of the night with an ear infection and thereore so had I. Both feeling a little weary. Matthew downloaded some photos to give to Bary and that took a while too. The kids entertained themselves while the adults did the work. I think they struggle a bit with the fat that we are working as well as having fun.
We made it ti Taumaranui in time for a life saving coffee, twelve is too lat in the day to have the first coffee...it will e scheduled in at an earlier time for the rest of the journey. We looked at getting mobile broadband, no place to get it in Taurmaranui. Ite's too hard to habe to stopat internet cafe along the way to upload this blog and check the email etc. Will have to wait to New Plymouth.
Anyway job done and off to the Blue Duck Station. It takes a while to get there over some gravel near the end and somemulti coloured bridges later we pulled in to the cafe. You wouldn't think that you could find a decent cafe in such an isolated place but we did. The cafe is but a small part of what is going on here. Dan Steele is the man who has the passion and the vision that has created a little piece of paradise. In some ways created, in other ways allowed nature to recreate what was here before man made his mark. Dan is mad keen on the Whio or Blue Duck. He has made it his mission to recreate their habitat and eradicate the predators who are cutting down their numbers os that now there are only 600 breeding pairs left in New Zealand. We me Eco Warriors who work for food and accommodation. They check traps, assist with docking sheep, make coffee, whatever is required.
So here we are on the edge of Taranaki and King Country at the gateway to the National Park. We arrive tired and a little 'windy road wobbly' to a great reception. Food, and coffee, puppies and a baby goat alonside a bird who stunned itself flying into a cafe window. The Irish couple behind the counter multi task in their job description, in an afternoon I saw Irish, organise a digger rescue, cook for guests and take out a hunting mission.
With the weather looking didgy for tomorrow we decided to take up the offer of looking around the station this afternoo. I had no idea what was coming. We got into a Polaris (sp) which is like an over done 4wd golf cart. Ruby in the front with Dan, Matthew and I in the middle and the boys standing at the bavk with about 5 of the 12 or so dogs that were keen to come. We Blasted on farm tracks, past buildings that had been abandoned along with the farms that were given to returned service men as reward. Not much reward for farming as most of the land is vertical and coveredin bush. Saw some bee hives located among the Manuka, these supply the budding Blue Duck honey business.
Things were hot and dusty and we ended up standing at the top of a waterfall that went down to a waterhole at the bottom. Mika had designs on diving off , which Dan agreed to as long as Mika went with a snorkel and cleared the whole water hole first. Plan B was to walk down to the bottom which we did. On arrival we found kayaks awaiting and the kids were off. Ruby made a grown up friend called Sophie and they went paddling together. We got some great photos which we will upload at some point. I was in yet another Moa dress and had an intense desire to swim. So I whipped it off, (slip underneathe) and jumped in...Bliss Then Matthew and I got a go on the kayaks and went through an area of high rock carved out by the river. Magic.
We never managed to catch sight of a Blue Duck but learned an awful lot about them and the history of the area. Kids are better off here then in school. The look of joy on their faces as we blasted around and the sound of laughter as the farm dogs took the wrong turn and had to catch up, was one of the things this journey is about, giving the kids the experience of a life time. The Blue Duck Cafe is officially very high up on the list as a favourite in The Search for the Great New Zealand Cafe.

20 November 2010

I don' know what day it is

Today we are photographing s goat curry, we slept in a lodge and we went to the top of the world

19 November 2010

Thursday 18th - Day 2

So woke up in the boat with the day stretching out in front of us. We made a decision to not do the Hu hu Cafe. Not because it isn't fabulous, because it is but because it is a restaurant and thats not what we are doing. After breakfast at the Morepork cafe,( not a book favourite) we went into Otorohanga to do a bit of food shopping and stumbled upon a gem of a cafe for the book. Origins Coffee Station. Owned by Roger and Liz originally from Malawi, this is a roastery and espresso bar in the Otorohanga railway station. Great coffee and space to be in. The first for the new book.

Back to Waitomo for the kiwi culture show at Billy Blacks, also where we happened to be staying. Fantastic show created by Barry and he now travels with it for corporate events, kids and others. A man with an ambition and the drive to make it happen. We met Jonah the rugby playing motorbike riding pig. He was very friendly and kids loved him. Ben did the show and between the explosions, dogs, donkey, sheep, moonwalking pig and us participating we had a ball. Mika and Ethan helped shear sheep, Ruby was front and centre at the feeding station for the show animals and Matthew did his bit for the milling industry on one end of a two man saw.
Really worth going to see if you are in the area. Do the show stay in a plane or hobbit dwelling and spend some time with the hosts. Shirley, Barry and Ben made our time there fantastic.

Another trip back to Otorohanga for the chiropractor for Matthew and then on to the Glow worm caves. Deep in the earth and onto a boat to explore the grotto. The highlight for me was Ruby singing in the ampitheatre style cave in front of the whole guided group.

Monopoly, cadoo and dinner completed the day. Onward to Blue Duck station tomorrow.

Night night

Wedenesday 17th November - Day One

So after all the work...today we made it...on the road and off in the Honda Odyssey. Ony one trip back home to pick up forgotten treasures, last contract signed, only minor tears and not a tantrum in sight, we made it on the road.
Stopped in Pirongia for a leg stretch and fround a very cool art/jewellery shop, defineitely worth a look. Moved on into Waitomo to the coolest accomodation, Woodlyn Park. I am currently lying on my bed with a view over treetops and a chandelier above my head. In a hotel? In a motel? Well yes a motel but not like any I have seen before. We are in a ship that is on land, adjacent toa plane motel and Hobbit motel, all a part of the unique experience that is Woodlyn Park. Very cool. Tomorrow we are going to watch a show that I believe includes a pig on a motorbike and a hypnotised sheep...watch this space.

The adventure stuff started today, yes with Black Water Rafting but before I tell you about that...one of us had more adventure then we expected in the first day. Ethan managed to have one bleeding nose (thanks to accidental contact with Mika's fist), one foot squashed (not much) in the car door, one bump on his head from making contact with the piping inside our ship motel, and one scratch on his fac (yep Mika again in an accident) while on the black rapids. He is to be confined to cotton wool for the remainder of the trip.

Matthew, Mika and Ethan went with The Legendary Blackwater Rafting Company on their Labyrinth trip. Had to be 12 to go so Ruby and I entertained ourselves with a dip in the river and an early trip to Huhu Cafe. Seems nice, though not many people when we were there at 4.30. We met Andy and Abby who own the place and we will catch up properly tomorrow. More restauranty (technical term) than cafe like and that may their point of difference...we shall see.

The rafting boys had a ball. The worst part was puttin on the wetsuits, and gettin them off at the end made for enertaining viewing. The best part was floating down a lone tunnel in a line with the lights out and the glow worms doing their thin. Ability to tell up from down and direction was lost in the reflections in the water and the undetground cool was a relief from what turned out to be a sweltering day. So all in all a good first day, although it's a bit strange being all together on the road for the first time.

This has been months in the making and I would have thought that now that we have made it we would be relieved and in some senses I am. But when you begin to get everything you want it is slightly terrifying. Who would have thought.

By the way, and I am nearly done, I did look fabulous in the black and white rose dress provided by The Moa Store in Grey Lynn. Felt pretty, cool and not at all dressed in the manor to which I am accustomed. Long may it last!

Where we are going

Today we will go to Waitomo and do the black water rafting with the kids. Who said that racing down a small, wet, and back hole while you are freezing cold can't be fun. But why do they ask people to pay for it?

Moment of truth

Its the day we go, and we both woke up feeling scared and wanting to hide. Creating big things is exciting with a strong tinge of fear, this is why so many don't do it. I never went to fear school and are only learning about it now.

Imagine three kids from three different parents, a couple and a 3 month road trip in a confined place. Yipeee the bonding will be great for our creativity

Last sleep before we go

Tomorrow we leave on the road trip. The camera and lens have fallen into place last minute, and we have to sign the contract for the car tomorrow morning on the way. I should be excited but I am too tired. Both of us have run around flat tack all day and we want to go to sleep.

Tomorrow morning I will pack, and then we are off...

2 sleeps to go

Monday morning rain, and things left to do. Lets see what we can find and have fun too. We're travelling around the country, with kids along too, hope you can follow us to see where we are at, maybe Waitomo, maybe Gore, but all in all its fair to say, it'll be there.

Our first poem post

4 sleeps to go

Sometimes magic comes from the most unexpected places. Niki was telling a friend how things were going just before we leave and was telling the story of how Canon didnt come through with any camera gear. Viola, we now have $500 towards a lens. It's true, there are fairy godmothers that can grant wishes..

5 sleeps to go

We have met with the publishers New Holland and its was fun. A great meeting and I feel we are part of the publishign empire now.

Bad new is Canon don't have any equipment for us so are in a scramble to see what we can do about it. If anyone knows anyone with access to a good lens let us know.

The final thought for the day is - if you feel you are going to blow up from too many good things happening at once, then you probably are..

6 sleeps to go

Today we got our first accommodation confirmed, and I had my interview of acceptance to Teachers college. You might think I would feel well, but not I feel sick. Having struggled for so long its a bit scary to have things finally happening. To be great one has to be comfortable with it, and I wnat more time...... please

7 sleeps to go

We are going for drives to explore the car, I have to say that I am really impressed with our new Honda Odyssey. It drives like a car, but you the kids in the back back seat (as Ruby calls it) are so far away you can hardly hear them (wouldnt tha be nice). Sunroof, all electrics, and parking sensors, hopefully I wont hit anything in this car..

8 sleeps to go

It is only 8 more days to go before we are off. This morning we pick up the car, we can't agree who should drive it first. I have been having disturbing dreams, all to do with the road trip, how will we all get on, three kids, two adults, first time away together.. I will be learning a lot thats for sure.

Still need to get some camera gear, this seems to be the last thing to fall into place, yet probably the most important.

Tent Backup

If we don 't get accommodation sponsorship, and we run out of money, then here is our last resort, quite stylish really. All we need now is some chairs and a barbey

9 Sleeps to go

There are only nine sleeps to we leave and there is a lot of organising to do. We still don't have any actual money to go away with, but we have come too far to go back now..

Buying Tents and the art of synergy

Niki said we should go and look at tents, this would make a good backup for somewhere to sleep. We did and found a sale and the possibility of more sponsorship. We then visited our friend and she had exactly the same tent, exactly the same airbeds, and even the pump that runs off the cigarette lighter.  We borrowed the lot, seems we are in a zone.

Writing books

we started with an idea of writing a book on New Zealand's character cafes. Now we are doing another two books. The first is a kids book about an adventure that two kids have across New Zealand The adventures of ME. The me being Mika and Ethan. Although it will be a kids story it will have factual information as well. For instance there will be a chapter on "The black holes of Waitomo". This will be a dramatisation of their adventure but will include details of the actual places. The kids have responsibility for talking about the experience and guiding us on layout. We hope this will be a great learning expereinec for them, and they get the royalties. The other book is the adventures of Ruby and Bella, the talking, farting cat. At least thats what I think it should be called.  We will be off soon, and we might even have some accommodation organsied as well..

Going that extra Mile

Niki is typing up letters to send to place for FOC accommodation. I am trying to get Blogs, twitter and Facebook to talk to each other.

And its Saturday night, only a week to go before we leave on the great road trip in  the car you see above, YAHOOO
